Best season to book family photos?

My 2024 outdoor calendar opens on Friday, 1/26! I have had several clients reach out recently trying to figure out when would be the best time to schedule a session, so I decided to put together this blog post.

Before booking, ask yourself....

  1. Is there a specific location you would like for your session? Many locations are only available during certain months of the year.
  2. Is there a specific family milestone you wish to document? Or favorite family activity (going to the beach, hiking, getting ice cream, roasting s'mores in your backyard) you wish to capture?
  3. Do you have a specific timeframe you need your images delivered? My contract turnaround time is 3 weeks (4weeks during the fall). For example, I often recommend clients who book a one year old session to schedule when their child is 11 months. This way they’ll have their images back by their first birthday.

Still undecided? See below for a list of pros & cons for each season!

Spring

May-June

Pros

  • Warmer temps (but not too hot yet).
  • Colors are beginning to pop on the trees, flowers are starting to bloom, and trees are not overpowered yet with summer greens.
  • Start time isn’t too late for those with younger children.
  • Less illness/scheduling conflicts with small children during the spring & summer months.

Cons

  • Unpredictable temps which could impact your outfit choice. Make sure to have layers ready to go so you don't have to change your outfit selection last minute.
  • Rain reschedules are always a possibility.

Summer

Mid June-Mid September

Summer is hands down my FAVORITE season for family photos.

Pros:

  • Warm temps which makes for happy toddlers and babies.
  • Less illnesses for young children during the summer months which means less of a chance of rescheduling.
  • Popular locations are less busy.
  • Golden glow! More of a chance the sun will hopefully be out during your session.
  • More location options including water (beach & creek).

Cons

  • Sessions are always done during golden hour which means a later start time during the summer months. July can start as late as 8pm. Although as a mom of 3 (with strict early bedtimes), I can promise you, your little ones will surprise you & do amazingly well with an evening session playing outside.
  • Summer heat & humidity.

Fall

Mid September-October

Pros:

  • Chance of fall colors and muted greens/rich fall tones. There is only a small window in MI with the full background of bright fall colors & cannot be predicted in advance.
  • Earlier start time which is great for young children/babies.
  • Colder temps and less humidity- great for layering and adding dimension to your images.

Cons:

  • Unpredictable temps. Layer up those babies so they stay happy during their session!!
  • Higher chance of scheduling conflicts/cancellations with your children once they are back to school due to sports, illnesses, & school events.
  • Popular locations can be very busy this time of year.
